Every bit of information on walking and walk cycles that I read say to watch people moving and walking. "You can't think it [to make it look right]- you go looking for it" -Jeff Newitt. Studding and being aware of natures movement, drama, moods, body language, actors, mime's, clowns, dances, sketching, life drawing etc. to help understand movement. As with mime's, clowns and acting for stage the movements need to be exaggerated and this is the same with animation. Movement originates in the hip. The leg is pulled forward from the hip making the hip rotate and the arms swing(opposite arm from leg). The body moves from side to side. In a fast walk the body leans forward more (even more for a run) making the legs move quicker to stop from falling over. I really have become more conscious of the way different people move.

"Every good hike brings you eventually back home." -Edward Abbey
There are many helpful tutorial sites on the net that teach Walk Cycles. "The Animator's Survival Kit" is a great book and is excellent for walk cycles.
